Manager

The game Championship Manager was the first one of the extremely popular Championship Manager Series from association football management simulated games. The Championship Manager was first released on Atari ST and Amiga in September 1992. It was ported to the DOS platform on a pc soon after the release. The game was written in their bedroom by the Collyer brothers.

The Championship Manager game had four playable English divisions. The FA Premier League which was newly formed at that time did not appear until 1993/94. The most notable thing was that every division had 20 teams only, of course in reality there were 22 to 24 teams in the league at that time. All the major domestic cups of the time were included such as the Anglo-Italian Cup. Apart from them, the three major European trophies (counting the now discarded Cup Winners Cup) were also included.

The teams outside the four playable English divisions and also all the foreign teams did not have any player names at all. Rather, the players were just called as "Number 4" or "Number 5" depending on their position on the field. There were some innovative things in the game but the most interesting was the addition of average rating for its players. After every match the performance of every player was graded from zero to ten. As the season continued, the average rating of the players gave the team manager a clear idea about the performance of individual players.

Other versions of the game

UbiSoft and Intelek in 1993 used Collyer's code for creating another version of the game suitable for the French market. It was called Guy Roux named after AJ Auxerre the legendary manager. The game was completely localized for France and contained the French divisions (first and second) as the playable leagues. It had all the commentary and text in French. This franchise of Guy Roux Manager since then has become extremely popular and has been running for a long time in France with the game being available on different platforms.

In that same year, 1993, a Norwegian version of the game was also launched and one year after the Italian one. The Norwegian version was quite similar to the English one. However, in the Italian version it was possible to substitute as many as four players. The deadline for the transfer occurred a lot earlier in the league season. Both these versions namely Italian and Norwegian, featured players having real names. This added to the rising popularity of the Championship Manager game.
