History

The Championship Manager Series is a series of computer games which is a simulation of British Football management. The first game of the series was released in 1992. The Championship Manager game and the brand was discovered by two brothers called, Oliver and Paul Collyer. This original game of Championship Manager was written from their bedroom situated in Shropshire, England. This is quite typical of most of the computer games programming teams of the earlier days of this industry. The brothers have since then founded a company in order to take the game even further. The company is called Sports Interactive and is based in Islington, North London. Out of the two brothers, Oliver only works on a part time basis now; however he still is the co-chairman of the company along with his brother. Sports Interactive and the Collyer brothers are not involved in the development of the Championship Manager game anymore.

BGS in a recent news item have commented that the Championship Manager will not be there for the 2010/11 season. They have informed their customers that the development team was instead looking at methods to reconcentrate their vision of the franchise and also redefine their business model. BGS also commented that even though a computer version of the game will not be released this season, they might announce many brand new Championship Manager titles in the upcoming season. In a thread of answers posted on the official Championship Manager forum, it was finally let out that there is going to be no further support (patches or game updates) for the Championship Manager 10 players. There was also no concrete promise of releasing a new game for the next season that is 2011/12 season. The release of this information got the company a lot of negative flak on the official forums. They however claimed that the communication between customers and BGS will be improved in the near future.

When the first version of Championship Manager was released in 1992, the game did not have an outstanding success immediately. The sales figures climbed steadily instead of rapidly. The reviews of the game were either dismissive or encouraging at best. The first game was written in the programming language BASIC which was prevalent at that time. But the language was not suitable to programming higher performance computer games. Another limitation of the game was, system generated names were used for all the teams. However the key competitors at that time like The Manager and Premier Manager had real life players.
